2002: The Year of the Horse Breyer's promotion on one of its The SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON Collection products
|
One of the most sought-after categories of SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON merchandise is the one with toys and figurines. Most distributed are the model horses by Breyer and the figurines from Hasbro WowWee. There even was a name for licensed SPIRIT products, which included the Breyer and Hasbro WowWee merchandise: The SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON Collection.
Breyer (founded in the USA in 1950) is now a division of Reeves International, Inc. They are a manufacturer of plastic model horses.
Hasbro, Inc. is an American company, founded in 1923. They produce toys, board games, and media.
WowWee Group Limited (founded in Canada in 1988) was purchased by Hasbro in 1998. The company was sold in November 2007.

Breyer Animal Creations© began as the Breyer Molding Company, a Chicago-based plastics manufacturer. Its first model horse made its appearance in 1950. The specific model horse was a request for a company, but Breyer was flooded with requests afterwards. With that first horse, Breyer Molding Company had changed its focus of business forever.
In 2002, Breyer introduced a series of models and collectibles based on DreamWorks' newly released animated feature, SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON. The collectibles in this line range from Traditional models to Stablemates-sized porcelain and pewter figurines, as well as mugs and treasure boxes. The models have a more "cartoonish" look than Breyer's normal work; this is to keep with the animated nature of the movie. Many thanks to Identify Your Breyer for all the information in this section

Traditional 1:9 |

At 1:9, the Traditional series is Breyer's largest scale of model horses. Adult horses are approximately 12''L x 9'' H (30,5 x 23 cm). There are two Traditional horses in Breyer's The SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON Collection: Spirit and Rain.
Both molds were newly sculpted for the SPIRIT Collection. Spirit was done by Kitty Cantrell, Rain by Kathleen Moody. Because of their slightly cartoonish looks, the molds haven't been used very often since their releases. |

Classics 1:12 |

Molds for the Classics series (scale 1:12) have been officially designed for the series since 1973. Adult horses are approximately 9''L x 6'' H (23 x 15 cm). There are two Classics sets in Breyer's The SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON Collection.
Each set consists of Spirit, Rain, and their foal. There is no official name for this foal. It is rumored it was designed for a sequel movie, which never happened. The foal is a buckskin like his father, but has some pinto markings, like his mother. |

Stablemates 1:32 |

Stablemates (scale 1:32) have been Breyer's smallest scale horses for a long time, until the Mini Whinnies were introduced in 2005. Adult horses are approximately 4''L x 3'' H (10 x 7,5 cm). There are two Stablemates sets in Breyer's The SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON Collection: Spirit and Rain.

Porcelain |

Breyer is known for its cellulose acetate (plastic) horses. Less well known are their porcelain horse figurines, which are aimed at the adult collector market. For The SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON Collection, Breyer produced several porcelain items.
Two larger scale porcelain statues, of Spirit and Rain, were sculpted by Sommer Prosser. There are five Stablemates sized porcelain sculptures, of Spirit, Rain, young Spirit, Esperanza, and Little Creek. Lastly, there is a porcelain diorama of Spirit, Rain, and the Eagle, called "Friends Forever". This diorama is a limited edition. |

Pewter |

|
Breyer is known for its cellulose acetate (plastic) horses. Some products have been made with different materials, but one of the least used materials is pewter. As far as known, these SPIRIT figurines are the only pewter products made by Breyer.
For the SPIRIT Collection, Breyer produced two pewter figurines: Spirit and Rain. They are the same molds as the porcelain Spirit and Rain in Stablemates scale. There is also an extremely rare version of the pewter Spirit with a base attatched: this figurine was gifted to all the SPIRIT crew members in 2002. |

Hasbro WowWee produced four play sets for the SPIRIT Collection: Summer Homeland, Winter Homeland, Lakota Valley, and Canyon. Every play set is boxed in a sturdy cardboard box, that is designed in every set's theme. Every box includes 10 small figurines, made out of a hard kind of plastic. An unfoldable background and cardboard accessories (like trees, bushes, and rocks) are included as well, each in theme with the specific set.

All the main characters are included in the SPIRIT Collection as action figurines. All legs (and arms) can be moved at the shoulder and hips, and the head/neck can be moved slightly. All horses come with brushable mane and tail. Some sets come with Homeland companions, others with smaller accessories. All horse sets come with a hairbrush and/or a comb.

Box Sets |

|
Hasbro WowWee produced four box sets for the SPIRIT Collection: Spirit and Friends, Homeland Friends, Lakota Village, and Frontier Fort. The horses are the same action figures as the ones mentioned above. All legs can be moved at the shoulder and hips, and the head/neck can be moved slightly. All horses come with brushable mane and tail. All sets come with four companions in total - either friend or foe.
All pictures of these box sets on the internet show that the included horses are flocked. There are also pictures of a normal (non-flocked) wrangler's pony. It seems that this pony is only included in the 'Frontier Front' box set, which concludes that the box sets must have been released as non-flocked as well.
