SPIRIT UNTAMED, a computer-animated adventure film inspired by SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON and SPIRIT RIDING FREE, was announced to be in development in October 2019. The movie is a spin-off and a stand-alone sequel of the 2002 original movie and is loosely based on the Netflix animated spin-off TV-series SPIRIT RIDING FREE. SPIRIT UNTAMED was theatrically released in the USA on June 4, 2021.
Although it stars characters from the SPIRIT RIDING FREE TV-series, SPIRIT UNTAMED does not continue the story, but seems more like a reboot of the Netflix adaptation. The titular horse Spirit is supposed to be a son to the original Spirit and Rain, but furthermore the movie has nothing to do with the 2002 original movie.

Story
SPIRIT UNTAMED is about Fortuna 'Lucky' Esperanza Navarro Prescott, a 12-year-old city girl who moves to the Wild West countryside with her Aunt Cora. In the small town of Miradero, they reunite with Lucky's estranged father, Jim Prescott. Lucky is unimpressed with the sleepy town until she discovers a unique tie to her late mother, who was a fearless horse-riding stunt performer. She quickly forms a bond with a wild mustang which she names Spirit, and befriends local girls Pru and Abigal, who love horses as much as she does.
When a heartless wrangler plans to capture Spirit and his herd of wild horses, Lucky and her new friends set off on an epic journey to rescue the horse who has given her an unbreakable connection to her mother's legacy.
Director Elaine Bogan confirmed that SPIRIT UNTAMED is set in the early 1900s.

Characters
Fortuna 'Lucky' Esperanza Navarro Prescott, a 12-year-old being raised by her aunt and grandfather in big city Philadelphia, is an adventurous and slightly clumsy girl. She lost her mother at the age of 2, after which her father, Jim Prescott, didn't know what to do with a baby in the Wild West. After driving her grandfather mad, he sends Lucky and her Aunt Cora off to stay with Jim for the summer.

Prudence 'Pru' Granger is a competitive young girl. Her father, Al Granger, is owner of the Granger's Corral. Pru has been around horses her whole life. Together with her own horse, Chica Linda, she loves to perform and show her own and Chica Linda's skills to the public. She has a sense of adventure, but also seems to weigh her (and her friends') choices.
|
Abigail Stone is a talkative, adventurous young girl. She appears to be something of a cowgirl, always around her loyal and funny steed Boomerang. Whenever her younger brother Snips is making trouble, she is always around to stop him (or, most likely, hog-tie him with her lasso). She doesn't appear to be as smart as Lucky or Pru, but she's always in for an adventure - especially when it includes her friends.

SpiritBold kiger mustang stallion Spirit is the lead stallion of a herd of wild horses, roaming the area around Miradero. Although his wild spirit and stubborness, he always puts his herd on number one. He was named by Lucky, after she overheard Hendricks telling corral-owner Al Granger that 'this mustang has got a lot of spirit'.

Chica LindaThe incomparable Chica Linda is truly something to behold, when she performs with her rider Pru. Chica Linda is a sassy mare; she's good, and she knows it. She might not be as strong as Spirit or Boomerang, but she sure is smart. Chica Linda means "pretty girl" in Spanish.
|
BoomerangBoomerang is kind-hearted, yet a bit silly. He is strong and has a huge love for food. His rider Abigail makes sure to always carry an apple around. During the movie, Boomerang and Abigail can be seen barrel riding. Boomerang seems like the perfect cowboy (or cowgirl) horse!

Jim PrescottJim Prescott, James Prescott Sr.'s son, is father to Lucky. He moved to the Wild West, probably to oversee the railroad expansion, since his father is the owner of the J.F.P. Railroad company. Starting a family with Milagro in Miradero, his happy life came to a stop after Milagro's fatal accident. He sends little Lucky back to Philadelphia, with hopes she'll have a better life there. Little does he know Lucky inherited her adventurous spirit from her mother.
|
Milagro Navarro PrescottMilagro Navarro Prescott is Lucky's late mother. It isn't known how she met Jim in the movie's timeline, but she was a formidable rider and stuntwoman in Los Caballeros. According to the movie's opening scene, she was most likely the main act. Together with her white horse Equuleus, she used to steal the show whilst performing. She died after a stunt went wrong, leaving Jim behind with a very young Lucky.
|
Aunt CoraCora Prescott, Jim's sister and thereby Lucky's aunt, is an educated lady. She grew up with her father, James Prescott Sr., in the wealthy upper classes of Philadelphia. She has tried to educate Lucky the same ladylike wise as she was, but keeps failing with it. After Lucky ruins an important party, she's sent off to spend the summer with Jim at Miradero - and Cora has to accompany her. It seems hard at first, but the Wild West brings out something adventurous in Cora.

Hendricks & GangHendricks and his gang are bad news for Miradero. They seem like average horse wranglers at first, but this is just a mask for what they really are: criminals. Apparently, they tried to rob a bank some place else (which didn't go according to plan). They end up in Miradero, trying to earn some money with breaking and selling horses. They definitely don't mind any consequences that come along..
|
Valentina & Los CaballerosValentina and her Los Caballeros can be seen performing at the start of the movie. They perform stunts on horseback. Milagro Navarro Prescott, Lucky's mother, used to be part of them, until her fatal accident. Valentina immediately recognizes Milagro's appearance when she encounters Lucky after her return to Miradero.

James Prescott Sr.James Prescott Sr., father to Jim and Cora, is a wealthy man living in Philadelphia. He owns the J.F.P. Railroad company, that has extended railroads all the way to Miradero in the Wild West. After Milagro's death, he took granddaughter Lucky in back at Philadelphia, where Aunt Cora tried to educate her. During the movie, James Prescott Sr. is running for governor. When Lucky ruins an important party, he sends her and Aunt Cora off to spend the summer in Miradero.
